About The Fest

The Yellowknife International Film Festival (YKIFF) is hosted by Western Arctic Moving Pictures (WAMP), in the capital city of Canada's Northwest Territories. YKIFF showcases film and new media works from all over the Canadian and Circumpolar North with selected international works.

Welcome to the 10th annual Yellowknife International Film Festival.

A film festival is only as good as its program and this year we have more films than ever before celebrating our 10th year with three different venues, one committed to free family films outside!  This year is also very exciting because we have one of our very own local features The Sun at Midnight, premiering to a sold out audience. This is the first feature dramatic film of this scale to be shot in the NWT, and definitely not the last.

Over the last 10 years the Yellowknife International Film Festival has brought circumpolar and relevant independent cinema to the capital city of the Northwest Territories. The festival is an important opportunity for northern filmmakers to celebrate their hard work, network and be recognized for our truly unique approach to storytelling.

The film festival in partnership with the NWT professional media association (NWTPMA) provides professional development and valuable networking events that have seen professional relationships grow into important mentors, collaborators and contacts in the national community. This year we are honored to have Zacharias Kunuk as a special guest accompanying the screening of his latest film, Maliglutit with a public conversation with the famous filmmaker.

This years festival is all about getting northern content out to the world and hatching new projects. Offering face time with broadcasters, distributors and funders who are eager to hear their ideas and work with northern content creators. Workshops with IndieCan Executive Producer Avi Federgreen include, What they don’t teach you in film school and how to successfully market and distribute your film. This fall it’s time for northern content creators to be heard, and it will be loud.

With such a diverse program of film and events the 2016 YKIFF program truly has something for everyone.  Many thanks to all of our partners and sponsors for their generous support, and an extra special thanks to our incredible volunteers!
